Review of Hammer Blade: Mr.Nozomi Sumi, Owner of Nozomi farm

We interviewed Nozomi Sumi, manager of Nozomi Farm, a facility for growing field horseradish.

QPlease tell us why you introduced the Weed Hammer Blade

A.I have long been interested in the Weed Hammer Blade because I have read about it in agricultural information magazines. In winter, it is warm in the greenhouses, and weeds grow quickly in the pathways, making weeding difficult. We used to mow with a nylon cutter or weed by hand, but as the area under management increased, we could no longer keep up with the work in time.

Q.How do you feel about the use of the product?

A.I use a Kyoritsu 34cc brushcutter with a Weed Hammer Blade triple attached. The tip of the brushcutter is heavy, but I can use it while sliding it on the ground, so it is not so much of a burden for me. I used it with the backpack type, and the movement of swinging it from side to side was physically demanding until I got used to it. Gradually I got used to it, and it was relatively easy to drag the weed whacker while backing up. Because of the high humidity in the greenhouse, it was sometimes difficult to use the weeder in areas with many pebbles because the soil adhered to the protective cover and the pebbles chewed through it. It was time-consuming to clean up the adhered soil, but it is comfortable if you clean the cover with a spatula. In fields with a lot of weeds or wet soil, it was better to moisten the cover immediately after irrigating to prevent soil from sticking to the inside of the cover and to work better.

Q.Have there been any changes in your work with the introduction of the Weed Hammer Blade?

A.The string trimmer we have been using, while convenient, have the disadvantage of generating a lot of flying debris. Weed Hammer Blade is very useful because it does not contaminate either the crop or the operator.

Above all, the ability to weed pathways in a short time is especially helpful. Since the Weed Hammer Blade  removes weeds from the point of growth, weeds grow less frequently. The fine grinding makes for a very clean finish after the work is done, and the fact that there is no need to collect the weeds that have been weeded out is a big advantage.
